Athletes are often the most popular students in school and considered leaders among their peers. When deciding how to act, many look to their leaders for guidance. By serving as a mentor and coach in the Special Hoops tournament, AAU basketball players have an opportunity to become friends with people with whom they otherwise may not have gotten to know, and can influence the treatment they receive from others.
If players embrace their peers who have special needs, others will likely follow suit. Such actions may help to reduce the amount of bullying experienced by children with disabilities. AAU players may also learn how to advocate for others, become strong allies, and use their influence for good. According to StopBullying.gov, “when bystanders intervene, bullying stops within 10 seconds 57% of the time.”
